Deliberate Use of Algae by Synthetic Food Producers

Algae is one of the most commonly known & most dangerous of water-borne organisms.
Green algae & red algae ('Red Tide') have been known to cause huge kill-offs of shell fish & other fish along both the Atlantic Ocean & Pacific Ocean coasts of the USA. This occurs too in freshwater lakes & their lagoons along The Great Lakes at the northern border of the USA.
Fish-eaters, among those aware of the green & red tides, know that the algae-contaminated fish also are dangerous to other fish-eating creatures, including humans, sometimes causing very severe food poisoning.
So consumers are warned to not eat algae-infested fish during the green or red tides, when algae populations are huge & so thick that the water itself looks green or red.
Synthetic food producers have learned to imitate nature to use UV (ultraviolet) light to change green algae to red algae, by interrupting chlorophyll-making chemical pathways in algae.
Companies such as 'Impossible Products' who produces 'The Impossible Burger' are using this technique to use algae to make algae-hamburgers which look like meat, complete with the thick, juicy, redness of rare meat.
This company actually has been spent time & money to obtain a 'Generally Regarded as Safe' (GRAS) approval from the USA Food & Drug Administration (FDA), according to 'FoodNavigator.com', March 13, 2019.
A related company Triton, is challenging 'The Impossible Burger' with their new 'heme' algae-burger product.
Triton is using a genetically-altered yeast, with altered yeast DNA, to produce a 'heme' ingredient, a 'le-hemoglobin' chemcial, which they claim is like ingredients in hamburger meat which 'makes meat taste meaty'.
Triton claims its 'heme' product should qualify for a 'not genetically altered' (Non-GMO) label, because the yeast used to make the synthetic 'heme' is removed from the product later in production, before the product is eaten.
Both companies apparently claim that UV light is often used in 'traditional' agricultural hybridization or breeding & shouldn't be considered 'genetic engineering', although UV light stimulation does alter DNA in the production of a new hybrid of a plant.

Deliberate Use of Algae in 'Health Foods' by Synthetic Food Producers

For those who haven't studied much biology, 'heme' is a nickname for hemoglobin, the essential oxygen-carrying molectule in human blood which allows people to nourish their bodies & provide energy for everyday life.
(The brighter right half of the photo above shows a symbiont hydra-green algae cluster of organisms described in the previous blog Pg 7--Symbiont Infestation.) The possible chlorella algae in this photo can be seen to crosslink (green web in the center). Crosslinks & branching tendrils, some arising from a thick spine, surround pieces of skin & other tissue (red & open, air or fat, spaces to the right) as the symbiont appears to continue to grow on human skin as part of a scab.)
Petri-dish imitation-meat producers have seized on the general public's interest in 'health food' to develop products which substitute synthetic for natural ingredients.
It's ironic that some companies use genetic enginering/alteration techniques to change other naturally-occurring organisms, like algae, into a synthetic food item labelled as meat, a naturally-occurring animal product.
Current weight-loss diets, such as the Keto Diet, as other high-protein diets in the past, stress eating large amounts of protein.
Algae are being used by synthetic food companies, as, incredibly enough, are insects, to increase protein content of many foods--from entre items, such as meats, to breakfast bars, bread, crackers, & many other snack & popular food & beverage items.
Triton is using algae species 'Chlamydomonas reinhardtii', developed from a precursor species of algae. Triton says this algae species can naturally produce 'heme' by interrupting the chlorophyll synthesis pathway, allowing a switch from green (chlorophyll) to red ('heme').
Further research into the apparently new genetically altered algae & its precursor used by Triton is necessary. The joint name ('Chlamydo' 'monas') is somewhat worrisome.
Chlamydia bacteria are well-known to cause sexually-transmiited disease in humans & pneumonia in Canadian geese & other birds, some of whom often rest near beaches & shores.
Trichomonas is a common yeast infection in human reproductive organs & can be sexually-transmitted.
It's wise to do some reserach into new products, whether 'health food' or organic items, or seemingly new more traditional food items which might appear on your local grocery store shelves.
